We are very fortunate in our location to be in the midst of one of the two principle areas on the west of Scotland for Bottlenose Dolphins. A group of some 35 individuals appear to live in the region which stretches from Kintyre (next to us) up to Skye, and it seems that they live in these waters all year round. While we do not see dolphins on every outing in the boat, we do have a significant frequency of encounters here. One recent encounter was on November 30th 2008, on our very first sailing with the Thalassa. We had just left the South Pier of Gigha, heading for Jura, when we came across a pod of some 12 dolphins, including at least two young calves. They always seem to enjoy the interaction with people in boats, and show a great deal of playful behaviour. This day was no exception, and we spent about 40 minutes circling around slowly near the south end of Gigha, occasionally being splashed by their play. Don was able to take over 500 photos, which have been passed on to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) in Tobermory, who use them to identify individuals.
